I take your point, but the overarching implication is that a climate of incivility helped facilitate Loughner’s actions. We have no way of knowing that. His issues were clearly, as you say, much more nuanced and highly personal.

The media needs to reign in its conjecture about why Loughner did what he did. We want a neat explanation, but there are no easy answers. Especially at this stage of the investigation.

I don’t think people are necessarily ascribing “political” motivations to Jared Lee Loughner. The issue (and even Krugman’s piece) is more nuanced than that.

By legitimizing the notion of violence entering political debate, irresponsible candidates/elected officials/media personalities are making it easier for a fringe person who finds some conspiracy (say, about grammar and mind control) to take the next step.

“Gosh, they’re pulling out the guns for a tax cut. these guys are controlling the whole nation and no one sees it. They must be stopped!”
