OMG: I’m not dead

Praise you Lord Raptor Jesus!

Yeah that’s right, I’m back and while I’m not exactly pulling a Jesus and returning from the underworld … I have been quite busy in recent days and just haven’t had the time to post.

Okay, strike that, I’ve had ample time to post, it’s just that I’m writing all day at work and when I come home the motivation is, well … lacking.

At any rate, there’s been some interesting stuff in the news lately. Did you know the always accurate Daily Mail has some incredible pictures of one of Earth’s last uncontacted tribes firing arrows at some anthropologist paparazzi scum?

Well they do! Based on these pictures, I’m thinking I totally want to go in there to experience Cannibal Holocaust firsthand. Either that or send in some indestructible Mars Rover-like device to study them live and in all their painted glory.

Alrighty-then … I’ll be back tomorrow with MOAR about the LOST season finale (hopefully), but until then saddle up and get ready for a new episode of BSG tonight at 10/9c kiddies!

RANDOM: Something store

The idea is simple … send them $10 and they’ll send you something random.

Maybe I should make a rival store for $5 a pop…

Check them out here and be sure to share what you get!

MOVIES: Star Wars: The Clone Wars

I’m actually surprisingly excited about this movie, which is scheduled for a release Aug. 15.

Check out the preview here.

Another of the summer’s most closely-guarded secrets, this animated extravaganza is meant to kick off the new Cartoon Network series of the same title. It’s said to be focused on Anakin Skywalker, fresh from his victory in Attack of the Clones and not yet following the path of the Dark Side. At his side is his determined female padawan Ahsoka, as well as the incomparable Obi-Wan. Together they become entangled in a plot in which the kidnapping of Jabba the Hutt’s son is used to set the Hutt clan against the Jedi Knights.

INTERESTING: Cluster ballooning takes world by storm

This looks brilliant

Have you ever dreamed of being carried into the sky by a giant bouquet of colorful toy balloons?

That’s the idea behind cluster ballooning. The pilot wears a harness, to which a cluster of large, helium-filled balloons are attached. Control is achieved by releasing ballast to ascend, or by bursting balloons to descend.

The most famous cluster balloon flight took place in 1982. Larry Walters, with no prior ballooning experience, attached 42 helium weather balloons to a lawnchair, intending to go up a few hundred feet, but instead soaring to 16,000. Surprisingly, Walters survived his flight. However, both before and since Walters’ adventure, experienced balloonists have experimented with helium balloon clusters, some rising to even greater heights.

VIDEO GAMES: What goes into writing a good script?

Surprisingly, it’s not as easy as you might think.

According to this article, video game writing is an entirely different breed of screenplay — writers must take into account design limitations, players who simply don’t care about story and the inherent problems with linear scripting in an environment controlled entirely by a third party.

Still, as gamers age and demographics shift, the desire for a good story has been a recurring compliant major multimedia corporations such as 2K Games have been forced to stare down.

Ken Levine, the creative director for Bioshock, said in an interview with MTV, ‘Most video game people have read one book and seen one movie in their life, which is Lord of the Rings and Aliens or variations of that. There’s great things in that, but you need some variety.’ Unfortunately, the combination of getting the game down on paper and the stereotypical love of pulp science fiction has led to many games telling stories that follow a similar, easily graphed structure. That can work great for simple, by-the-numbers fantasy stories, but it can be tough to get much more depth than that when all you know is science fiction.

Check out this essay from the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) for more fascinating information on how the writer fits into the creative process of game design.

AMERICA: McConaughey does Cpt. America

While Marvel’s anticipated Captain America movie isn’t slated to hit theaters until May 6, 2011, sources around the entertainment industry are reporting casting directors are already looking for their leading man.
This week Cinemablend reported an unlikely candidate — Matthew McConaughey — to fill the role of the uber-patriotic leader of the Avengers.
I’m thinking this is going nowhere …

INTERNETS: "Logging off" IRL needn’t be so traumatic …

When you can send e-mails from beyond the grave!

Posthumous e-mail services are an example of what has been described as the ‘transcendence industries,’ enterprises that … allow you to leave vital posthumous instructions for family and friends concerning such things as funeral arrangements, financial records, estate details, and insurance plans.

[These services] also address the intricate netiquette of virtual relationships, since, as Wrafter points out, “many people now have more friends online than off.” This service considers the posthumous needs of the techno-savvy, habitués of MySpace, LiveJournal, Flickr and other community-based sites, as well as online gamers who can spend years building up an in-game personality and maintaining virtual relationships. “People know you, engage with you, expect your presence. Suddenly you are gone. It’s inexplicable,” says Wrafter.

Interesting. Maybe by the time we are all old bags our wills will all be done electronically, that’s a tad creepy.

I’ll tell you what I would like to see, however — old grandmas writing gold-digging daughter-and-laws out of the will and posting the videos on YouTube.

Now that would be entertaining.

JUICY: New "Dark Knight" sneak peak …

MUSIC: So there is benefit to driving home at 2:30 AM …

I got to hear this little ditty on the radio for the first time in like a decade …

BSG: Bald chief and an upcoming hybrid meet and greet!

A few things of note that stood out to me during tonight’s episode:

1. I was so glad the writers finally gave Helo some latitude with his dialog! I always knew him going off on someone would be awesome … and guess what, it totally was!

2. Anders’ arms are getting out of control. Let me be the first to ask the uncomfortable question– is he on the juice? Y/N/M????

3. How come whenever people go crazy on TV (i.e. TYROL) they shave their head?

4. Gaius just gets more and more awesome each episode, but was he was being sincere with the Chief?

5. The whole Kara/Leoben thing just gets better and better …

6. Hybrid meet and greet next week!

Battlestar is famous for leaving us hanging, but this week is going to be torture!!!

Here’s a one-minute recap of the episode:
